YD25 Diagnostics.

YD25 Diagnostics.

Postby kiwibacon » Tue Feb 23, 2010 10:33 am

Hey Guys.

I've finally got a hook into that YD25 powered presage van I've been trying to buy for over 6 months now.
It's got the YD25DDTi engine (similar to a navara, but not commonrail and in sideways).
It's a 1998.

It's got issues, exactly what I don't know and won't know until after it's been delivered. Since I'm currently in Europe that'll be around April.
How do I get on with diagnostics of the ECU for a nissan of this age? Both my other nissans (98 and 00) have OBD2 ports, but they can't be read by an OBD2 reader. They don't have the CONSULT plug of older nissans either.

The ECU will still be a normal consult (assuming it has the 2 rows of pins with a blue connector) and you can (at least with the W11 Avenir) wire up a consult port. The stupid D shaped white connector is for a GST (General Service Tool) or ConsultII tool.
Took me forever to figure this out, I think it was looking at the T30 (X-Trail) manual I have that made me realise. I'll see if I can track down my wiring diagram for wiring in the consult, but it's the same as any of the earlier gen cars, pins 14, 15, 23, 7 I think, but you don't need the clock pin (and it's missing anyway) as the newer ECU's have their own clock gen.

Edit: Found it:

ECU pin-----Signal-------Consult port
14 ----------- CLK-----------9
15 ----------- RX-------------2
7 ------------ TX-------------1
47 ----------- IGN-----------7
39 ----------- GND----------8

Aha, thanks a lot.
So what software are you using with that and what can be done?

I toasted my first serial consult cable from PLMS when trying to figure out the GST connector (must have connected up 12v onto the wrong pin  ) and that came with NisTalk. I was going to buy another from them but ended up buying a USB one from ECUTalk which has the free ECUTalk software on their website and was cheaper than the PLMS one. It's $80AUS.

As for what functionality you can do, basic troubleshooting, error codes, base timing mode and other stuff. Haven't played with ECUTalk much, but I know NissTalk allowed you to switch of cylinders and a bunch of other stuff.

Excellent, thanks. I'll hit them up when I'm back in the country.

So yeah, I have the vehicle, engine appears mechanically present and correct but fuel isn't flowing. I get dry air out the glow-plug hole when cranking it.

Blazt say their cables can't talk to diesel, have emailled ecutalk.

Anyone got a location for the ECU in this van? There are a lot of potential hiding places.

Kind of quiet in here.

Anyway, I figured a problem that had stumped mechanics for over two years would be something tricky and probably electrical. But no, all the electrics are fine and the ECU did not need disturbed or even located. The problem was air in the fuel which was solved by finding and tightening the appropriate hose clamp.

I'm still astounded that it was this easy and the van runs perfectly now.
