The VG30 is a strong and capable block, but getting up to 3.2 litres is about the limit on a boosted application due to the cylinder wall thickness. But what if you could get more capacity without sacreficing strength, would you do it? The VG33 is a SOHC version of the VG30 block, in which the cylinder walls and water galleries are redesigned to allow for a 4.5mm bigger bore than the VG30, but the crank and rods are essentially the same as the VG30 - overbore it 1.5mm, drop in some VH45 pistons, and you have something truely special. Escort racing makes a race version of the VG34ET that makes 700+whp, so building it for street use should still give you heaps of grunt.
Benefits:
400cc bigger than a VG30
Rare but simple
Hugely powerful
What you will need:
VG33 block
VG33 crank
VG33 rods
VH45DE pistons and wristpins
How do you do it:
The easy stuff
1) bore the block from the factory 91.5mm to 93mm
2) machine the piston ends of the rods to 22mm to fit the VH45 piston gudgeon pins
3) fit the crank, rods, and pistons
!!! WRITEUP STILL TO BE FINNISHED !!!
This bottom end should fit the SOHC heads from any VG30 with minor water gallery alignment
